Inspiration
Serâser's designs are inspired by 14-16c Moorish architecture, and 16-17c Ottoman silk and metal brocades. Color and relational values are finely tuned in these designs. The sharp contrast of dark, rich hues with bright accents causes the patterns to pop and dance. The positive space in the designs often functions as breathing room, allowing a continual flow of meditative movement which travels in multiple directions through the patterns.
The name, Serâser, is a tightly woven stiff gilt brocade made during the Ottoman Empire in Turkey. The brocade has a silk warp and a weft of gilded silver which together give it a brilliant sheen. Due to the weight and expense of the materials, and the laborious process, this fabric was largely reserved for ceremonial kaftans.
